Staten Island Tech CAD in the Community
It is very special that sometimes students and programs at Staten Island Tech are recognized by the community for being uniquely helpful to them as a school. Usually someone from an organization or another school will reach out to us for help on an important project. Occasionally we as a school see an opportunity for us to help, so we can propose the project idea too! These projects are very special to us as they give us the chance to help others just by using the power of the student body at SI Tech. Take a look!
Richmond Town at PlayThe CAD Classes were approached by the Borough President's Office and Historic Richmond Town to design a playground slated to be an attraction in the renovation and revitalization of Staten Island's famous Historic Richmond Town. Our sister school McKee also participated. The results were simply amazing, but was it ever built?? Click here for the story! |
VISIT ProgramThroughout the year we bring underprivileged, high-caliber students from elementary and middle schools in all parts of Staten Island and many from Brooklyn to spend the day with us at SI Tech. This is the spark that ignites their desire to pursue being a student with us when the time comes. We know it works, as many of our current students speak to their VISIT from years past. |
SI Museum - GeothermalThe Staten Island Museum asked CAD at Tech to build a model for their educational branch for when schools visit the Museum. It has a rare and modern HVAC system powered by a complex array of Geothermal wells that dig deep into the Earth to harness natural energy to treat the air. Mr. Buro and Ben Segall (2017) built a model using 3D printers on a tight budget. |
D31 - SI Hall of ScienceThe Petrides Education complex, home of the D31 Education Office, decided to convert a massive two-story, 150 foot wide record storage room into the Staten Island Borough President's Hall of Science. A costly renovation indeed! What better way to raise money than to build a VR model for fundraising? Mr. Buro and a team went to measure the site and designed the model in Revit. It is now an exhibition hall for island schools. |
Tompkinsville Park PS16There is a small park in Thompkinsville Staten Island that is in dire need of a renovation. The neighborhood is home to PS 16 - a school full of hard-working students with a passion for STEM lead by their teacher. We worked with NYC Parks, the Island Voice, PS 16, and others to make this happen. It is a pity that this grand idea was never completed, due to difficulty in getting our students to be with those of PS 16. |
VISIT+ JHS STEM RebornTraditional shop classes at the middle school level are breathing their last breath. SI Tech teamed up with STEM leaders in the D31 office to rejuvenate shop classes in two targeted middle schools in need of such a program for its students. We wanted to show them how to bring CTE driven STEM education combining electrical and mechanical engineering in a series of 11 visits each running concurrently with their classes. |
We have also helped out at the Garibaldi-Meucci Museum, as well as being Technology Advisors to the PS 32 FIRST Lego Robotics Team... more pages featuring theses items to come!
