Star Trek 3D Chess
In the March of 2019 I decided to use the Glowforge Pro Laser cutting and etching machine along side our Prusa MKIII 3D printers to re-create the mysterious 3D Chess game set that has appeared in several generations of Star Trek and the Big Bang Theory. I found a Star Trek Technical Manual online with scale drawings that allowed me to determine the dimensions via proportional relationships. The Geometry was extremely well thought out for something that appeared on screen for less than a few minutes over many many years. The design has made its mark, as a full set of rules also exists. I plan on having the pieces designed in 3D to be printed, for now I bought a glass chess set in 5-Below for the pieces.
Unfortunately it has been bent somehow or damaged slightly during 2019-2020 school year when I was out for my Skull surgeries (if this is surprising you, see the 'Mr. Buro' page. The structural components are made of wood, etched and cut on the Glowforge. They have been spray painted according to OSHA safety procedures in a metallic gold color/texture. The 3 large fixed game boards and 4 small movable game boards are cut and etched into acryllic. The pegs for the movable boards are 3D printed and also spray painted metallic gold. As I mentioned before, plans for the game pieces to be designed and 3D printed are inevitiable. Repair of the setup should be simple as well. |
